Mannerist Style Brooch

This Mannerist style brooch is displayed in the jewellery cabinet of the Small Collections Room.  It was evidently a prized family piece, and was carefully reproduced down to the minutest details in the bronze portrait bust of Olof Gollcher’s mother Elisa, which can be found in the Drawing Room.  Elisa Gollcher is also seen wearing it in several photos which are located in the Gollcher Archives at the Palazzo.  The brooch is characterised by a profusion of colourful enamelled decoration in the form of openwork designs, articulated by bird heads and a cherub.  Coloured gems and small pearls further embellish the design, which centres on a coloured step cut gem.
