Calabrian School, 16th Century Style, Holy Family with Saints, oil on panel, 23x17cm
This icon was first attributed to a 16th century Calabrian School by John Cauchi in the first published catalogue of this collection (J.A. Cauchi, Catalogue of Paintings Watercolours Prints and Reliefs in the Palazzo Falzon known as “The Norman House” Mdina, Malta 1973). It depicts a sacra conversazione, or scene of an enthroned Madonna and Child surrounded by St. Joseph, St. Elizabeth, an infant St. John the Baptist, and a Dominican saint who receives the palm of martyrdom from the Christ Child. An angel bearing roses hovers above the scene. The painting is set within an oval border and painted roses appear at the corners beyond the oval.
