This lidded horizontally-long earthenware container is known in Maltese as il-baqra (the cow), and was used for cooking stew.  It stands on four squat legs, and has a head-shaped protrusion on one side.  It has a glazed interior, could be placed in the oven, and was primarily used for cooking rabbit stew.
