Two ancient wells at Palazzo Falson were recently investigated using an underwater robot and sonar technology to record data and translate it into spatial information. The underwater robot (VideoRay Micro ROV) explored the various chambers leading off from the main chamber and produced footage of areas that lay unseen deep beneath Palazzo Falson for centuries, possibly even for millenia. The multi-disciplinary US/Maltese led team who are managing the project, which explores ancient wells in Maltese and Gozitan sites, say that 'the goal of this project was to obtain video and sonar data that will help archeologists understand the evolution of water storage systems in Malta'.
