Join us for conversations on ceramics, featuring special guests Huw Groucutt and Sofia and Matt from THISS Clay. Bringing together perspectives from an archaeologist and two creatives as we reflect on the materials and techniques in ceramics.
Huw Groucutt, an archaeologist engaged in research from West Africa to North Wales, with a particular focus on the way environmental change impacted early human societies in the Saharo-Arabian arid belt and in Malta will join Sofia and Matt, founders of THISS Clay, a creative duo emerging from different design backgrounds who now craft whimsical and quirky pieces through their pottery practice.
This talk aims to spark a conversation around ceramics, exploring the materials, techniques, and craftsmanship that have survived from archaeological traditions into contemporary practice.

Introducing our guest speaker – Huw Groucutt
Huw Groucutt is an archaeologist and lecturer in Mediterranean prehistory in the Department of Classics and Archaeology at the University of Malta.
He has been engaged in archaeological research from West Africa to North Wales, with a particular focus on the way environmental change impacted early human societies in the Saharo-Arabian arid belt and in Malta. Groucutt currently leads the 'TerraForm' project funded by the European Research Council, which is exploring the origins, evolution, and impacts of agricultural terracing in the Maltese islands, as well as being involved in a variety of other projects, such as at Latnija Cave.
During conversations on ceramics, we will explore the stories these objects reveal that can sometimes reshape our understanding of the past.
Introducing our guest speakers – Matt and Sofia
Matt and Sofia are the creative duo behind THISS Clay. Coming from different design backgrounds, they eventually found their way to ceramics. Working from their studio in Malta, they are drawn to both perfection and imperfection, combining their contrasting design styles to creating ceramic pieces which are functional, quirky, and whimsical.
During conversations on ceramics, we will explore contemporary ceramic practice and the experimentation behind creating unique works within a craft deeply rooted in history.
