Dusk Dialogues: Conversations on Collections

In Conversations on Collections, the next event in our Dusk Dialogues series, we’ll explore the world of collecting with our guest speaker, Dr. Theresa Vella.

Together, we’ll delve into the art of collecting and where better to do so than within Olof Gollcher’s own remarkable collection! Drawing on her own hands-on experience with collections as well as her research into the captivating art collection of the Order of St John.

She will be joined in conversation by our very own curator, Abigail Pace, as they discuss the appeal of collecting, its significance for research, and the fascination behind collectors’ curiosities.

This talk aims to ignite curiosity around the art of collecting and how it continues to shape knowledge, identity, and cultural memory.

Meet our guest speaker for Dusk Dialogues: Conversations on Collections

Theresa Vella

Dr Theresa Vella is an art historian and museologist with a research interest in the history of art collecting and landscape art. She was the Curator of the Fine Arts Section of the Museums Department, as well as Heritage Malta and has moved to the private sector as founding partner of Curatorial Studio. She is the author of Splendour and Devotion: The Art Collections of the Order of St John (Patrimonju, 2023) and senior visiting lecturer in History of Art and Museology at the University of Malta.

In this edition of Dusk Dialogues, we explore the art and meaning of collecting through hands-on experience with collections as well as Dr Vella’s research into the captivating art collection of the Order of St John. Set within Olof Gollcher’s own unique collection at Palazzo Falson, this conversation delves into the stories objects tell, the legacy of collectors, and the role of collections in research and cultural preservation.

This talk invites you to reflect on what drives the desire to collect? How do collections shape our understanding of history, identity, and culture?
