Join us for conversations on musical instruments, featuring two special guests, Francesco Sultana and Fiorella Camilleri, who will share their experiences in the world of music-making and instrument craftsmanship.
We will explore the work of Francesco Sultana, a musician, researcher, and craftsman dedicated to preserving Malta’s traditional musical heritage. Through the study of historical records, artworks, and surviving instruments, he recreates traditional sounds and builds instruments such as the żaqq, the Maltese bagpipe. Joined by Fiorella Camilleri, a lead flautist with the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra, whose work as a performer is complemented by her interest in international relations and the role of music in cross-cultural dialogue.
This talk aims to spark dialogue about the art of musical instruments, from the craft of building them to the skill of playing them, and from traditional music to the ways music can create cultural connections.

Introducing our guest speaker – Francesco Sultana
Francesco Sultana is a musician with a passion for world music, exploring traditional percussion and woodwinds from across the globe. He is one of the few remaining craftsmen dedicated to preserving Malta’s traditional folk wind instruments, including the Żaqq, Żummara, and Flejguta.
He has performed both locally and internationally, recorded with bands such as Plato’s Dream Machine and Brodu, performed as a soloist with the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra and appeared at notable occasions using his self-made Maltese folk instruments, including a performance for Queen Elizabeth II. Francesco continues to share his knowledge through workshops and performances for the public and in schools.
During conversations on musical instruments, we will explore the skills involved in both crafting instruments and bringing them to life through performance.
Introducing our guest speaker – Fiorella Camilleri
Fiorella Camilleri is a Sub-Principal Flute/Piccolo with the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra and as an avid chamber musician, she uses her ensembles to promote the notion of cultural diplomacy and international collaboration through music.
She has founded several acclaimed ensembles, including the Cinco Flores Duo with Mexican guitarist Andrés González Nájera, The Cinco Flores Duo, the Catal Flute and Guitar Duo with Cuban guitarist Ahmed Dickinson Cárdenas, and the Camilleri–Lucini Flute and Guitar Duo, performing internationally in Europe, Asia, and Cuba. Her collaborations include cross-cultural projects, such as merging Maltese and Japanese traditional music during performances in Shizuoka and Tokyo.
During conversations on musical instruments , we will explore a musician’s world, delving into the challenges of materials, climate, and context that are often overlooked.
