We recently had the pleasure of visiting Incunabula 1474–2025, a solo exhibition by Francesca Balzan, former curator of Palazzo Falson! Curated by Justine Balzan Demajo, the exhibition is currently on at the National Library of Malta, Valletta.
This remarkable exhibition features a new series of porcelain sculptures, each character shaped by Francesca and inspired by characters found in the National Library’s collection of early printed books: the 15th-century incunabula. These works merge contemporary technology (3D printing) with the authenticity of the artist’s hand, highlighting how innovation can assist but never replace, the expertise and uniqueness of a skilled artist's hand.
Our heartfelt thanks go to Francesca, Justine, and Perit Matthew Catania for sharing their experience and insights into the creative process, preparations and the concept behind the exhibition. We also extend our thanks to the National Library of Malta for welcoming us.
This is an exhibition not to be missed! It remains open until 12 December 2025, so make sure to visit in these final days. To discover more and explore Francesca’s work, visit her Instagram page: @franbalzansculpture.
