Lecture on the History of Fans

October 27, 2010

The general public is invited to a lecture on the history of fans to be delivered by published author and fan expert Hélène E. Alexander MBE FRSA at the Phoenicia Hotel, Valletta on Friday 12th November at 7.00pm. Attendance is free of charge but seats will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

Hélène Alexander, Director/Curator of the Fan Museum, London, has been involved in the study, history, art and craft of the fan for over fifty years. A French education and cosmopolitan background have made her one of the World experts in her subject. After graduating from the (now) Central St. Martin University of London and with an MA in Art History she worked at the Victoria and Albert Museum for thirteen years. She was founder/president of the Fan Circle International and has published articles and books and lectured on fans in Europe and the USA. With her late husband she created the first and only accredited museum of fans in the world.

This is the third in a series of talks by specialists on historical and art historical themes, which are being organized for the general public by Palazzo Falson in conjunction with Fondazzjoni Patrimonju Malti. The first talk featured Oriental carpets and was given by Ms Jennifer Wearden of the Victoria & Albert Museum, and the second talk featured Watches and was given by Mr David Thompson of the British Museum.

Palazzo Falson has a collection of 30 fans including one fan made of Maltese lace, and two fan boxes.
